Questions & Answers

Is there a burning question you'd like to ask to me or something you'd like to know about the writer's life? I write an occasional blog called ink-magination and have answered some FAQ below. If there's something else you'd like to know or ask, send me a message via my contact page.

"What is your favourite part about writing books?" - Oliver, St Edwards Primary, Romford, Essex

For me, there are four different parts. First, there's getting an idea and playing with it, researching if necessary. Then there's writing the story, followed by editing. Finally, there's sharing the story at schools, libraries and festivals. The hardest is getting the story down and not worrying that it isn't yet perfect; that comes at the editing stage.

"Where do you write your stories?" - Hannah, at West Norwood Library, South London

Anywhere! My teenage children play a lot of sport so I drive them to various sports venues and need to hang around for hours at a time so I use it as an opportunity to write. The white noise of swimming pools is strangely calming so I sit by the pool. I sit in cafes. I also write on trains, in the car (not while I'm driving!), on the beach, up a mountain. Sometimes it's with pen and paper, sometimes it's in my head, mulling over plot ideas. Sometimes I'll pretend I'm a character that I'm developing so I can get an insight into what it's like to be him or her. It's all part of my writing process.
