Popping Up in Medway and London
Having the chance to access the magic of books is an opportunity that more children are having thanks to Pop Up Projects - and I'm lucky enough to be one of the authors working with them.
Over the course of two days, I visited Reception and Year 1 children at two primary schools in Hackney, North London, and three primary schools in Medway, Kent.
Thanks to financial support from various sponsors, including the Paul Hamlyn Foundtion and the Arts Council, the schools were able to use two of my books, As Quiet As A Mouse and I Could Be, You Could Be, to support their creative writing and artistic skills in the classroom. My visits gave them an opportunity to share their work with me and to join in with some imaginative and rather noisy retellings of the stories. Leila, from one of the Medway schools, drew a special portrait of Edgar and Ruby from As Quiet As A Mouse.
Pop Up Projects is a social enterprise company with the aim of giving children and their families a chance to take part in creative projects they might otherwise miss out on. They run various projects in locations around the country.
